Evaluation of Terrestrial Ecosystem GHG Budget with A Process-based Model: 25 Years of VISIT Study
This talk was presented as part of a new series by the Ecological Society of America's Asian Ecology Section (www.esa.org/asian/), AES Talks. Akihiko Ito of the University of Tokyo (Japan) presented at 8:30 PM ET on September 4, 2024.
Professor Akihiko Ito has been a distinguished faculty member of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences since 2023. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Tsukuba in 2001. His early career included a pivotal role as a project researcher at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) from 2001 to 2005, where he contributed to advanced ecological modeling efforts. Subsequently, he joined the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), serving as a senior researcher in the Earth System Division until 2023. Professor Ito's expertise spans ecological modeling, plant ecophysiology, and the biogeochemistry of carbon and nitrogen. His work focuses on global environmental change, with significant contributions to the development of process-based models of atmosphere-ecosystem exchanges. These models have been instrumental in addressing key scientific questions and informing policy decisions on climate change and ecosystem management.

A Scoping Study for a NASA Tropical Forest Terrestrial Ecology Campaign

The tropics are experiencing dramatic changes as a result of climate change and land-use change. Shifts in carbon flux dynamics, water cycling, and species composition are resulting in feedbacks with globally important consequences for biodiversity, climate change, and food production. Yet, we also know that the tropical forests are not uniform. Their species diversity, climate, soils, and huma...

I'm actually super down with the way her people introduce themself, as she explained it helps eliminate the audience's need to question their source's biases. Imagine if all journalists did that with political media, it would be so helpful.

YIN AND YANG: cannot have one without the other. this planet is extremely out of balance. GIVE AND take; cause AND effect; this AND that; every ACTION has an EQUAL AND OPPOSITE RE-ACTION, one of the basic laws of physics on this planet. what goes up MUST COME DOWN: GRAVITY is why we are here. magnetism-opposites attract, positive AND negative. time to re-PAIR, not divide or conquer. mother earth is being 'driven to the point of exhaustion'.
